Australia is the largest island and the smallest continent in the world. It lies between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean. It is about 11,000 kilometers southwest of North America and 3,200 kilometers southeast of mainland Asia.

Australia has a single national and comprehensive system of twelve qualifications, which are the basis of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Australian federal and state governments endorse AQF qualifications, so an AQF qualification is recognized throughout Australia and by other countries.

The population of Australia is almost nineteen million. More than four-fifths of the people live in cities and towns that are generally in coastal areas near the mouth of a river and as close as possible to a good ocean harbor. The main cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and Canberra and are all State Capital cities. Most Australians enjoy an excellent standard of living, good educational opportunities and a relaxed lifestyle made possible by the outstanding natural and economic features of the country.

Australia has 39 universities that deliver only the highest quality, mainly traditional, courses and programs. Universities have to pass stringent quality assurance tests to be authorized to use the word university in their title. The word degree is similarly protected terminology. Australian universities offer undergraduate and post graduate degree and diploma courses to international students.
Vocational Education and Training programs (VET) are available through private colleges and Technical and Further Education institutes known as (TAFE). Programs available at these institutions provide students with the skills needed in many areas of employment. Australia's national qualifications framework allows graduates from VET programs to use their certificate qualifications as the first steps into further study, including diploma and degree programs.
